The ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) is designed as:
1. High speed of data rate.
2. Low error rate
3. Digital of voice and videos.
4. Operating cost is Low.

  • It Flexibility and versatility of voice, videos & images can be transmitted  over a single or integrated  network.
  • Higher transmission capability.
  • It support for virtual networks.
1. Physical layer
  • Physical layer is  a point-to-point transfer.
  • Physical layer adds its own information to each cell
Physical layer performs four functions:
i) Physical layer converts bits into cells.
ii) Physical Layer transmits and receives the bits on physical medium.

2. ATM layer
  • ATM layer provides the routing information to the data cells.
3. ATM Adaptation Layer
  • It provides the flexibility of a single communication such as data, voice, video and multimedia.

For the samples that are highly correlated, when encoded by PCM technique, leave redundant information behind. To process this redundant information and to have a better output, it is a wise decision to take a predicted sampled value, assumed from its previous output and summarize them with the quantized values. Such a process is called as  Differential PCM (DPCM) technique. DPCM Transmitter The DPCM Transmitter consists of Quantizer and Predictor with two summer circuits.
